Mechanical Relays in Uninterruptible Power Supplies
Relay’s make a clicking sound when they make or break their contacts. That sound is frequently heard in computer Uninterruptible Power Supplies when relays switch circuits between battery backup and ac line voltage. I open a UPS and discuss how a line-interactive UPS works including MOVs, op-amp voltage threshold detectors, comparator Logic, transistor relay driver circuit, and mechanical relays that switch taps on the Auto-transformer. I also design a transistor relay driver circuit similar to those found in UPS backups, and I show UPS relays in action.
